Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
